Die Kryptowährung Dogecoin begann als Internetgag. Dann twitterte Elon Musk erstmalsüber sie – und entfachte einen Hype, auf den zuerst die Nutzer der Internetplattform Redditund dann Krypto-Investoren aus aller Welt aufsprangen.Im Mai 2021 kletterte der Dogecoin-Kurs auf sein bisheriges Rekordhoch von 0,73 Dollar – korrigierte dann aber deutlich. Was ist Dogecoin (DOGE) und wer steckt dahinter?
Dogecoin war zunächst nicht mehr als ein kleiner Spaß eines australischen Programmierers. Billy Markus, beruflich in der Marketingabteilung des Softwareherstellers Adobe tätig, wollte mit der Kryptowährung den Bitcoin und andere virtuelle Güter parodieren, die seinerzeit im Netz einen Hype erlebten. Jackson Palmer, Programmierer aus dem US-Bundesstaat Oregon, half bei der technischen Umsetzung. Am 6. Dezember 2013 stellten die beiden ihre Spaßwährung in einem Onlineforum vor. Name und Optik des Dogecoin basieren auf einem beliebten Internet-Scherz („Meme“), der einen Hund der japanischen Shiba-Rasse zeigt. „v“ ist eine bewusste Abwandlung des englischen Wortes „dog“.

„Dogecoin ist wie Bitcoin – nur so gut wie wertlos“, titelte die amerikanische Webseite „Digitaltrends“ im Dezember 2013, kurz nachdem die Spaßwährung gestartet war. Ein Nutzer des Internetforums „Bitcointalk“ scherzte: „Dogecoin wird bestimmt noch einmal sehr wertvoll werden.“

Tatsächlich fand Dogecoin schnell größeren Anklang, als seine Erfinder erwartet hatten. Über eine Million Internetnutzer besuchten die Webseite der Spaßwährung im ersten Monat ihres Bestehens. Nutzer auf Internetplattformen wie „Twitch“ oder „Reddit“ verwendeten Dogecoin zunehmend für sogenannte „Tips“, also kleinere Aufmerksamkeiten für nützliche Beiträge anderer Nutzer. Ernsthaft mit Bitcoin konkurrieren wolle man aber nach wie vor nicht, sagte Co-Erfinder Jackson Palmer seinerzeit dem US-Portal „Insider“. „Dogecoin nimmt sich selbst nicht so ernst wie Bitcoin“, so Palmer. „Er wird nicht von Menschen verwendet, die damit reich werden wollen.“
2018 überschritt der Marktwert von Dogecoin die Zwei-Milliarden-Dollar-Marke. Dennoch blieb Dogecoin eine Nische unter den digitalen Vermögenswerten. Fünf Jahre lang blieb der Kurs der Kryptowährung unter einem Cent – und kehrte nach einem kurzen Hoch im Januar 2018 (1,4 Cent) auch schnell wieder in diese Gefilde zurück.
Dann, im Dezember 2020, kam ein folgenschweres Twitter-Posting von Elon Musk. „Ein Wort: Doge“, schrieb der Tesla-Chef am 21. Dezember 2020 in einem Twitter-Schlagabtausch mit dem amerikanischen Bitcoin-Investor Michael Saylor. Der Kurs der Kryptowährung schoss daraufhin innerhalb weniger Tage um 200 Prozent nach oben.
2021 setzte sich die Kursrally fort – und wieder war Twitter dafür verantwortlich. In dem sozialen Netzwerk und auf der Internetplattform Reddit schlossen sich Nutzer zusammen, um den Kurs der Spaßwährung gezielt nach oben zu treiben. Tatsächlich kletterte der Preis der Kryptowährung daraufhin auf einen neuen Höchstwert von 5,4 Cent. Und das war erst der Anfang: Am 5. Mai 2021 erreichte Dogecoin eine Marktkapitalisierung von mehr als 85 Milliarden Dollar. Wenige Tage später, am 8. Mai 2021, kletterte der Dogecoin-Kurs auf sein bisheriges Rekordhoch von 0,73 US-Dollar.
Aktuell notiert der Dogecoin-Kurs weit unter seinem Allzeithochbei rund 0,12Dollar undeiner Marktkapitalisierung von rund 15,85Milliarden Dollar (Stand: 4. November2022).
Prognose: Wie wird sich der Dogecoin-Kurs (DOGE) entwickeln?
Der große Internethype um Dogecoin war aufgrund des anhaltenden Bärenmarktes an den Börsen und am Kryptomarktabgeflaut. Zuletzt sprang der Kurs der Kryptowährung am 28. Oktober2022, nachdem Elon Musk die Führung beiTwitter übernommen hatte, aber wieder deutlich an.
Der Tesla-Chef ist für DOGE ein Kurstreiber. Monate zuvorverbuchte derKurs einen Kurssprung, nachdem Musk im Februar bekanntgab, die Kryptowährung als offizielles Zahlungsmittel für Tesla-Metaverse-Artikel zu akzeptieren. Teslawerde für ein paar Merchandising-Waren Doge annehmen und sehen wie es läuft, teilte der Chef des US-Elektroauto-Pioniers noch im Dezember 2021in einem Tweet mit. Tesla verkauft auch Waren mit Firmenlogo wie etwa Kleidung, Modell-Fahrzeuge oder das Quad-Gefährt für Kinder „Cyberquad“.
Dogecoin standlange in der Top Tender nach Marktkapitalisierung wertvollsten Kryptowährungen. Die Kurve der Kursentwicklung zeigtebis in den Januar 2022 hineinaber konsequent nach unten, sodass der Coin zeitweise auf Platz 12 abrutschte. Aufgrund der aktuellen Kursentwicklung hat DOGE seinen Wert aber wieder deutlich steigern können und befindet sich damit wiederunter denTop Ten Krypto-Coins.
Eine genaue Prognose, wie sich der Dogecoin-Kurs weiter entwickeln wird, ist aber nur schwer möglich. Denn: Dogecoin gilt als ausgesprochen volatil. Das liegt zum einen daran, dass wenige Investoren einen großen Anteil aller Dogecoin-Bestände halten. Zum anderen machen sich organisierte Gruppen im Internet gerne einen Spaß daraus, den Kurs der Kryptowährung kurzzeitig nach oben zu treiben.
Nicht zuletzt hängt der Dogecoin-Kurs auch von der Laune seiner prominenten Befürworter ab wie eben Elon Musk: Als dieser im Januar 2021 augenzwinkernd für Dogecoin auf Twitter warbt, schnellte der Kurs in die Höhe. Im Mai dann sprach der Tesla-Gründer in einer US-Unterhaltungssendung von Dogecoin als „Hustle“ (zu Deutsch etwa: „Abzocke“) – und der Kurs brach über Nacht um 28 Prozent ein. Zuletzt ließ Tesla den Coin für Zahlungen von Merch-Artikeln zu und der Kurs reagierte zeitweise mit zweistelligen Kursgewinnen.

Neue Coins werden primär durch die Rechenleistung von Hardware geschürft, sind also arbeits- und energieaufwendig. Wer über einen sehr leistungsstarken Rechner und ein spezielles Mining-Tool verfügt, kann sich über einen „Mining Pool“ mit anderen Schürfern zusammenschließen. Wirklich lohnenswert ist das Ganze allerdings nicht. Die Belohnungen, die einzelne Schürfer erhalten, fallen inzwischen eher gering aus – auch um die Inflationsraten im Zaum zu halten.
Welche Vorteile hat Dogecoin gegenüber dem Bitcoin?
Gegenüber dem Bitcoin hat Dogecoin einen entscheidenden Vorteil: Die Transaktionen gehen hier schneller vonstatten. Das liegt daran, dass die Verschlüsselung weniger kompliziert ist als beim Krypto-Marktführer.
Welche Nachteile hat Dogecoin gegenüber dem Bitcoin?
Während die Anzahl der Bitcoins auf 21 Millionen begrenzt ist, gibt es ein solches Limit bei Dogecoin nicht. Seit 2015 landen jährlich 5,26 Milliarden neue Doge-Münzen auf dem Markt. Dadurch entsteht eine anhaltende Inflation – und das Potenzial für eine Wertsteigerung ist gering.
Ein weiterer Nachteil: Der derzeitige Bestand an Dogecoin ist zu einem beträchtlichen Teil in den Händen einiger weniger Investoren. Das größte Problem der Kryptowährung sei deren „zu große Konzentration“, räumte selbst Dogecoin-Fan Elon Musk hierzu auf Twitter ein. Laut „Wall Street Journal“ gibt es einen einzigen Großinvestor, der allein stolze 28 Prozent der Währung hält. Seine Identität ist – wie bei Kryptowährungen üblich – nicht bekannt. Dass anonyme Einzelpersonen derart großen Einfluss auf den Kurs der Kryptowährung nehmen könnten, macht ein langfristiges Dogecoin-Investment für Anleger zu einer hochriskanten Wette.
